Pediatrician Waldemar Weber is at his wits' end. Of all days, his adopted son Egon—from his first marriage, whom Waldemar has always kept a secret from his young wife Henny—has announced he’s coming to visit on their first wedding anniversary. Waldemar must stop Egon at all costs. When Egon finally shows up at the door, he turns out to be a monkey trainer.

The adaptation of the eponymous play by Carl Zuckmayer tells the story of renegade general Harras of the German Luftwaffe, who during WWII openly criticizes the Nazi regime. As a consequence, he is put under surveillance, and even imprisoned for a brief period of time. Still remaining outspoken, Harras realizes the horrific dimensions of this hopeless and injust war waged by Germany.

While Sebastian Haffner explains and comments on operations and decisions on the basis of situation maps, key scenes are depicted by actors. A main focus is thereby placed by Haffner onto the controversial mission of lieutenant-colonel Richard Hentsch who is said to have, during a war patrol to the various army high commands, contributed to the abortion of the operations significantly.
