An old prince lives in his ancient palace in Rome together with the ghosts of his ancestors. In Genoa, amongst the underclass living on the fringes of the law, Machedi organises the trafficking of women, to be exploited and sent off to who knows where. One of these women is Alda, who has evaded the ring once, but when her boyfriend is arrested, finds herself back in Machedi's net.

Forced by her lover to sell her body, Renata is saved from a suicide attempt by Paolo Martelli, an engineer. She asks him to help her find a job. When Paolo's wife humiliates her, Renata gains revenge by seducing the woman's husband.
