Directing
Every program had a number of elements woven into the plot line that invited its audience to "Join In!"; in games, songs, puzzles, or stories. The cast also broke the fourth wall, talking to the camera, and thus the audience, as if they were right there on set. The songs broke away from the usual children's format, offering a wide variety of rhythm and styles. The cast also sang live on each show.
Big and Small are opposites who encounter adventures and misadventures due to their differences, teaching friendship and tolerance through humor and meaningful stories.
Mysterious cowboy Ned Kincaid arrives at Shining Time Station and instantly builds a bond with Stacy Jones. A jealous Schemer resorts to his old devious ways in an attempt to win over her interest.
Queen for a Day is the final family special and the seventieth episode of Shining Time Station.
Dala and special guests Oh Susanna and Good Lovelies perform original songs and many covers, including songs by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Ian Tyson, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, and more. Billy's nephew, Kit, comes to visit the station
Mr. Conductor's sister and Kara's grandfather come for a visit. He builds a go-kart for Kara and wants her to participate in the annual race. Meanwhile, Mr. Conductor gets upset when his sister uses her magic to play tricks on others.
