Jonathan Wong Ka-nok

Death is a moment whose reverberation endures for the living. Three students from the Audio-Visual team are shooting a documentary on a schoolmate who has recently committed suicide. It is intended to convey a ‘positive message’ to the entire school about the importance of life. During interviews, the students notice some discrepancies in the testimonies, particularly those by a prefect and a teacher, while friends of the deceased seem to be withholding some inconvenient truth. Should the team pursue the truth, or act as the school’s propagandist? Filmed in a mocumentary style, The Handbook of Suicide Prevention challenges and exposes the hypocrisy and suppression that haunt adolescence.

Anger breeds anger, and hatred breeds hatred. Restaurant owner Mr. Wong stresses about the business when he has to face rent increases every year. Restless and tense, he channels his anger to Ka Yeung, the timid newest employee. Taunted by his customers, his boss and life in general, Ka Yeung is barely keeping his head above the water with his father being an unlicensed hawker. One incident escalates to another like a Greek tragedy and anger spirals out of control, causing irreparable outcome. This is a story about two men who live in an unforgiving city, both trying to find their way out but ended up hurting each other.

Kam Tin is home to people of many ethnicities, like a miniature United Nations. Chris moves there from the city with his wife Erica and their daughter, Wing Yan. As they adjust to their new life, they must also learn how to get along with neighbors of different ethnicities. Chris starts a business with an Indian partner, though Erica has little faith in it. Wing Yan befriends an African asylum seeker, sparking gossip. Haunted by unpleasant past experiences, Erica carries racial stereotypes, growing increasingly anxious and unsettled as tensions rise…This film is funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Life perhaps resembles a football match. Losses could have been undone if you are ambitious enough. In A Floating Hope, Kit seemingly takes up this football philosophy. As a little school boy, he has to face the consequences of his parents’ divorce. On his birthday, Kit meets his mother for a brief time, wishing to regain a mother-and-son relationship.

Child finds her peace of mind in drawing but that does not please her mother at all. At school she is bullied by her Visual Arts classmates, while the teacher regards her works as ‘not up to standard’. One day comes a substitute teacher who introduces the different possibilities of art to Child and that there is no right or wrong when it comes to painting assignments. There has never been anyone in her life that brings her such inspiration. Holding her charcoal stick in hand, Child finally knows whose portrait she should draw.
