Biography

David Farmer is an American sound designer at Skywalker Sound. Raised on a farm in Gladys, Virginia, he developed an early interest in music as a guitarist and drummer before deciding to pursue a career in sound after seeing behind-the-scenes footage of sound designer Ben Burtt creating effects for the Star Wars films. He studied Recording Arts at Full Sail University in Florida before moving to Los Angeles, where he began his career as an intern at a Burbank post-production facility. He was inducted into the Full Sail Hall of Fame in 2011. Farmer established himself during the 1990s as a sound effects editor and sound designer on films including Mortal Kombat (1995), Con Air (1997), Armageddon (1998), Space Cowboys (2000) and The Replacements (2000), while also working on television productions and numerous video games. He is best known for his work as sound designer on The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), creating sounds for Ringwraiths, the Balrog and the Cave Troll. He returned to Middle-earth for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), creating the sound of Smaug, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). His other film credits include King Kong (2005), A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), Ant-Man (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Eternals (2021), Blue Beetle (2023), Thunderbolts (2025) and Avengers: Doomsday (2026). His television work includes The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019), Loki Season 1 (2021) and Willow (2022). He has also worked extensively in video games, including World of Warcraft (2004), Diablo III (2012), StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm (2013), Halo Infinite (2021), Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (2021), God of War Ragnarök (2022) and The Callisto Protocol (2022). Farmer has received three BAFTA Award nominations for Best Sound for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for The Gorge (2025), and a Satellite Award nomination for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). He has also received numerous Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Award nominations, winning for GoldenEye: Rogue Agent (2004), StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (2010), StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm(2013), Overwatch: Honor and Glory (2017), World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth (2018), God of War Ragnarök (2022), The Wild Robot (2024) and The Gorge (2025). He also shared the 2013 Game Audio Network Guild Award for Audio of the Year for Diablo III (2012). Outside his work, Farmer is an avid field recordist who has released ambient soundscape and white-noise recordings under the artist names Aural Escapes, Dream Candy and Hushaboo. He also frequently incorporates recordings of his daughter's voice into his sound design.
