Biography
Pierre-Dominique Gaisseau was a French documentary filmmaker and explorer, best known for his pioneering work in ethnographic cinema. Born in Charleville-Mézières, he began his career as a journalist and photographer before venturing into filmmaking. Gaisseau led several expeditions to remote regions, documenting indigenous cultures. His most acclaimed work, Le Ciel et la Boue (The Sky Above, the Mud Below) (1961), chronicled a seven-month expedition through uncharted territories of Netherlands New Guinea. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1962. Gaisseau's other notable works include La Forêt sacrée (1954) and Only One New York (1964). His films are celebrated for their authentic portrayal of indigenous cultures and adventurous spirit.

Bounding from one continent to another, from desert to jungle, this early mondo documentary examines the habits and customs of people whose lives are unaffected by the modern world. In New Guinea, director Pierre-Dominique Gaisseau's crew spends time with jungle villagers who honor the deceased by preserving their corpses, and in Africa they film the resourceful people of the Kalahari. Other subjects include a Brazilian community whose male members wear lip-stretching jewelry.
Flame and the Fire
In September, 1959, six Europeans leave Cook's Bay on the southern coast of Dutch New Guinea, now West Papua or Irian Jaya, to trek north to the far side of the island. The journey (450 miles, as a crow flies) across unmapped territory took seven months; three Muyu porters died. Near both coasts, the expedition met villagers who invited them to observe rituals and live with them. In the interior, all villagers kept them at bay, and they depended on air lifts from Hollandia for food and supplies. They climbed above 10,000 feet, built 14 bridges, and fought leeches and malaria. The narrator focuses on describing Stone Age savages, headhunters, and cannibals.
