Little Matti, who has been living in the countryside with his grandmother, leaves for Helsinki to search for his missing mother, Kerttu. In the city, he is helped by Taneli, a homeless alcoholic artist, and Salme, a girl who lives with her alcoholic aunt.

Set in Southern Finland between 1912 and 1936. Due to his father's drunkenness, high school student Jussi Raala has lost his inheritance, the manor house and the sawmill, to the gunman Lumia. Bitter and vengeful, Jussi decides to get the property back.

Opri is an evacuee from Karelia and is forced to move into a nursing home when his cottage is demolished. He immediately begins to take care of other elderly residents and nursing home staff, as well as their romantic concerns, as soon as he steps into his new home.

Yrjänä's farm is plagued by infertility and the lady of the house decides to get a child by any means to continue her famous family. She's in conflict with her husband and with the church.

A widower takes care of his three children who are trying to find him a new wife.

Katri is hired as a maid in Ruuhiniemi. Over the years, she works hard and even dares to dream of love and being the owner of the farm, but the scheming in the division of the inheritance complicate the future.
