Initially only interested in his own good, the thief and burglar hides Jewish refugees for 14 months in the sewers of the Nazi-occupied town of Lviv (formerly Poland).

Unique archives show a world that no longer exists: pre-war Poland in which two cultures: Jewish and Polish, coexisted wall-in-wall; cottage in a cottage; town next to town. "Po-lin" - meaning "we will stop here" in Yiddish - does not deny the painful past. It only shows that there was something more next to them. Worth remembering and - perhaps - reconstruction.

In November 1947, Wieslawa Pajdak was arrested for her activities in the anti-communist underground and sent to prison on Rakowiecka Street. A few days later, Jerzy Smiechowski was placed in the next cell. One night, they begin talking through the wall via Morse code. Although it's hard to believe, this is how they met and fell in love. They got engaged through a wall. Seven years later, they married in prison, where they met for the first time. They lived together for fifty years.

In this documentary Marek Edelman, a member of the Jewish Labor Bund and leading participant in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, gives a daily account of events from April 19 through May 10, 1942. Edelman’s amazingly thorough, vivid and distinct memories are augmented by Dylewska’s mesmerizing, poetic use of slow motion and freeze-frame techniques applied to documentary material including Nazi footage of Jews about to be deported to Treblinka.

Shortly before his death, Marek Edelman (1919-2009), former commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (1943) against the Nazi occupation, wonders about several basic themes of human existence in relation to the Shoah: how was it possible to enjoy love, tenderness, passion and lust while the whole world was crumbling and burning around.
