Pauline Belle

After writing for Cahiers du cinéma, a young Jean-Luc Godard decides making films is the best film criticism. He convinces producer Georges de Beauregard to fund a low-budget feature, and creates a treatment with fellow New Wave filmmaker François Truffaut about a gangster couple. The result? Breathless, one of the first features of the Nouvelle Vague era of French cinema.

Greg is a police lieutenant; he must collect informations on eco-activists, infiltrating them for months. Myriam, a young free woman, is fighting to save a forest from the building of a dam. They meet and fall in love on the Zone. A beautiful life, a joy that Greg discovers, despite the risks of being unmasked. For each of them, time is short: soon everything will disappear.

If we regard wandering as a way of inhabiting a place without claiming ownership or blending into it—a notion still open to question—the inner movement within this wandering, which sometimes feels like stillness, indeed traces an irreversible line toward a gradual dispossession of self. Dispossession in all its forms, yet primarily there is the issue of language. In the short film Le Livre laissé blanc, we explore the protagonist’s conscious journey as she confronts her loss of language within the inner landscape of her wandering. She attempts to remember her lost language or, alternatively, to make the language of the Other her own.
