Gerard is a playboy novelist in New York, living off of his father and friends' money because none of his novels sell. He's a confirmed bachelor. One day, he gets a letter from his father in Monaco. His father is a very successful hotel owner, and the letter basically states that Gerard is to come home, buckle down and learn the business, and marry a woman of his father's choosing.

Seeking fame and artistic freedom, Wolfgang leaves Salzburg with his mother. Yet unlike his childhood days, he is no longer celebrated everywhere he goes. Eventually, he exhausts his funds, and tragedy strikes when his mother dies during their travels. Heartbroken, Wolfgang returns home, where Baroness von Waldstätten, who has long recognized his genius, offers her support. Strengthened by her encouragement, Wolfgang resolves to move to Vienna to pursue his music career.

This gentleman had great poetic ability, a handsome honor, was valorous, and was generally of an open and natural nature. This Narihara meets the beautiful Princess Takaiko, who is working as a dancing girl at one of the imperial flower banquets... (Same cast but 2002 version.)
