Yunyi Zhu

Marking the 30th anniversary of Derek Jarman's passing, close friend and collaborator Tilda Swinton leads a poetic tribute to the late artist and filmmaker with a slow, meditative journey into Jarman’s poem "Chroma" during a visit to Beijing.

On the afternoon of September 22nd, 2023, sunny, in the Summer Palace, in the glowing, colorful Kunming Lake Tilda Swinton and I were on a boat talking about Jarman’s garden, his last film Blue, and the poem Chroma, which he wrote around the same time.

Director Zhu's friend, Xiaoxin, contracted an eye disease. He gradually lost his eyesight, and by 2015, he had gone completely blind. He told Zhu that the total blackness scared him, and Zhu felt that he was on his way to somewhere.

The world is alive, but maybe without mirrors and images, none of it would exist. The blind create images in a different way – with sounds, textures and experiences. When you enter the rabbit hole, imagination plays the main part.
