In 1963, a business adventure begins in a basement in a small Danish town. Within a few years, the company has 3500 employees, many of them women who are experiencing for the first time the joys and challenges of earning their own money.

Two days before Christmas, while Sweden is paralyzed by a heavy snowstorm, five-week-old baby Lukas inexplicably disappears from his home. Experienced police officer Alice thinks that something is not right in the parents' stories.

The story centers on a family of priests: Johannes, Elisabeth and their sons August and Christian. Johannes is God-like to his sons - he gives, loves, and punishes. His favoritism for August and his disappointment with Christian forces both into making desperate choices in order to either gain his love or break free from him.
