Biography
Pyae is an internationally award-winning filmmaker and producer from Myanmar. He began his filmmaking career in 2013 and has since created numerous short films, documentaries, and feature films. He is an alumnus of renowned international film workshops such as Produire au Sud (Nantes, France), the Locarno Film Festival (Locarno, Switzerland), FLY (Busan, Korea) and Talent Tokyo (Tokyo, Japan). His debut feature film, The Dark Cinema, became one of Myanmar’s hit films in 2019 and won the Best Horror Film award at the Diorama International Film Festival in New Delhi, India. The Dark Cinema also became the first Myanmar film screened in Central America at the Panama Horror Film Festival.

Since the post-election period in 2010, the poor farm-less people from Malatto village group, Maubin district in Ayeyarwaddy region have been struggling hard for their living almost every year. This happens since there has been less and less land in the region where they can earn their living. Their rights to use natural resources in their local area has been limited. So, they face lots of difficulties in meeting their basic needs. When the stakeholders of the water and land areas in that region have got the right to open their hearts, we can hear the “Whisper from Malatto”.

The Dark Cinema
Thu Ya is a Burmese filmmaker currently engaged in the editing phase of an unfinished project. One day, a friend reached out to him with an opportunity to pursue a new career as a waiter in Thailand. This prompted Thu Ya to make a significant decision: whether to conclude his filmmaking journey or to seek a life where his human rights are fully recognized.

During COVID second wave in Yangon, a lonely woman “Ma” lost her job as a kitchen helper in the restaurant. On her way back home, Ma gets a chance to meet her crush. She is waiting for him in her room with much excitement.
