Just how far is it acceptable to push actors in the name of cinema? And at what point do you cross the boundary where acting becomes sexual assault? These are the questions raised by the testimony of six young women who were manipulated and sexually abused during an audition.
Nico, a filmmaker, returns to her hometown to lead a storytelling workshop with her childhood friend Lori, a schoolteacher there. Lori’s pupils are asked to imagine their future selves. The children’s thoughts prompt Nico and Lori to reexamine their own decisions in life — as well as their friendship.
The filmmaker is on a search for her heritage and the story of her father’s escape. She is joined by her two friends, the cinematographer and the composer of the film, as they travel through Bulgaria. They examine places, texts, letters, documents and archival footage of her family from the past and present in Bulgaria and Germany. A memory-like dive between times and places, an ongoing conversation with a dead father.
Johanna’s dangerous talent is showing early – after a traumatizing loss of control she is forced to keep her powers in check. As she gets older, it’s getting harder and harder to do, so she contacts a secret group. The members want to unleash Johanna’s powers and tempt her to more drastic steps.
