Pavel, who grew up in an orphanage, is one of the displaced people living there, hoping to start a new life in Taganrog. Father Herman believes his charges will eventually return home, while Pavel aims to build a new future.

Alexey, still a young man, found himself in an extremely difficult situation. He must devote most of his time to his mother, who is almost completely paralyzed after a stroke. His situation is aggravated by the fact that his mother, once an actress in a small provincial theater, no longer sees the point of living.
