October 1941. German forces have penetrated deep into Russia and are laying waste to everything they see. The Soviet high command takes every chance they get to secure the rear and take anything of historic importance out of harm's way.
Lica, a woman with sight problems, gets a job at a company that makes paper flowers. After the sudden death of her father, she has to look after her brother and sister. However, soon after the funeral, her stepmother kicks the children out and Lica decides to live temporarily in her dead grandmother's house.
