In war-torn Japan, the Tokugawa Shogun, desperate to restore peace to his people, orders the assassination of the hostile warlords. A beautiful young woman is raised from birth with nine other orphans, to become an assassin. Her name is Azumi, the ultimate assassin.
Lucius Modestus, ancient Roman bath architect, has lost his job. The one way he can win it back is by creating a bath that nobody has seen before, and, by pure chance, ends up slipping through time to Japan in 2012. There, he discovers the wonders of Japanese bath technology, incorporating it into his own designs, but must face the challenges of the succession of the emperor, his home life, and his new hot spring-based friends, including manga artist meet-cute Mami.
Director Jun Ichikawa spins this affectionate portrait of the people who populate Shimokitazawa, a bohemian corner of Tokyo filled with small theater companies and smoky coffeehouses.
Periods are depicted as pink, heart-shaped sentient beings that harass women on a monthly basis, delivering awful gut punches, but also offering a shoulder to cry on.
