Kwon Sun-hyeon

After the dissolution of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which was launched as a South Korean government organization in 2005, civic groups and bereaved families wishing to complete the mission the government had failed to accomplish form a joint organization to investigate the remains of civilians who were massacred during the Korean War. A three-year-long documentary about the organization’s three-year-long excavation efforts, 206: Unearthed is a record of sunlight, dirt, and sweat.

Soe, Joe, and Tommy came from a land they call ‘Burma.’ They are illegal foreign workers in Korea. Hard work worn them out, but they hold onto their lives with a sole pride; being a breadwinner for the family back home. On the weekends, they comfort themselves with bottles of hard liquors. Soe and Joe are determined to go back home finally after a decade, but Tommy is determined not to go back until he can make a flashy return with good sum of money.

I am fascinated by candlelight. If the world finally came to an end, I imagined it would be like a candlelight. People laughed, cried, and shouted in the square. Thanks to a small spark in my hands, I was able to imagine a new world to come after the apocalypse. Fascinated by the roaring flame, I didn't think of those who couldn't afford to hold candlelight, those who couldn't occupy the square.

Joh Sung-yong, a veteran architect, wins a design competition to redevelop an apartment complex with his architectural philosophy of preserving the old and trees, but struggles to defend his plans amid opposition from developers and Korean society obsessed with the new and fast.

On a wintery night, Juyeon receives a call from her father. In his drunken voice, he leaves strange remarks, “Don’t become like your aunt who committed suicide.” Stunned by the family secret, she starts chasing the traces of her aunt, who resembles her strikingly. Juyeon breaks the suffocating silence and recreates her aunt’s lost voice through animation.
