Poor but brilliant doctor Jayanta (Uttam Kumar) and Mallika (Suchitra Sen), the grand-daughter of one of the richest men in Darjeeling, fall head over heels in love. This story is as Ashoke Mukherjee is a well educated, honest, sincere and hardworking person who lives with his mother. Gopa, his lover lives in his neighborhood. Ashoke appointed as a cashier in a bank. But after some day he meets with police and got arrested. After returning from jail he understand that it was a conspiracy. But this whole incident actually demolished his all dreams. His mother was dead and he do not trace Gopa. Jayanta Chowdhury, a ground engineer, is gravely injured and is received by his fiancé, Kuntala who takes care of him. However, Jayanta is not at peace as he suspects a conspiracy. He returns to Kolkata, much to Kuntala’s dismay, and starts following another ground engineer Sandeep Mukherjee, who he believes has betrayed his employer. Jayanta gets together with the Intelligence Officer Ranjit Mitra and traces Sandeep’s whereabouts. Sandeep is actually involved with the criminals Krishn Chand and Abdullah who force him to plant a bomb on an international flight. Sandeep, rather unwillingly, gives in as he needs money to treat his handicapped younger brother. Although he loves a girl named Ruby, he is unable to marry her for the same reason. Jayanta takes up the name of Arun Roy and befriends Sandeep to learn more about him. And the plot thickens.
The story revolves around the last life crisis of Jamini Mohan and his wife. After his retirement, Jamini Mohan and his wife Santoshini continued to be despised in the family of their earning sons. At this time, Gobinda, an orphan of a distant relative, became their mental hope. After facing various humiliations from their blood relationship Jamini Mohan died and as the mother of three sons, Santoshini became a burden to this family. Eventually, Gobinda became Santoshini's absolute refuge.
Politician Priyanath forces Sunita for prostitution. She is abducted by the gangster Ranjan, but latter involves and falls in love with Sujit. Sujit, just recovered from mental breakdown also involves with Sunita. While Sunita is going to marry Sujit, Ranjan kills Sunita.

Kakoli and Sukanto meet in a library reading room. They gradually grow closer to each other and start meeting frequently. She ends up falling for him and that ruins his career, even though he did not feel the same for her. He later gets married to Kalyani but he and Sandhya still share a bond for the sake of her property.

Lalu and Chinta are neighbours and extremely good friends. One morning both of die and reach hell. However Yandyut exclaims that there was a mistake and that they were not the individuals he intended to kill. He orders Lalu and Chinta to be sent back to the earth but the latter claim for a tour of hell as compensation. Soon the friends find themselves back on earth but soon realize that their souls have been exchanges in error. This leads to a series of confusion of themselves as well as their near and dear ones. In the end their souls come back to themselves and there is no bound to their happiness, much to the amusement of the rest who did not know why they were so happy.

The story is a simple tale of a great soul Sarbananda based on a simple village. Shambhu is a small boy raised up by his mother and grandfather. Shambhu is extremely mischievous and does things. Everybody in the village knows each other and all share a common feeling of love and concern for each other. But Shambhu belongs to lower caste and so every time he and his family is met with intense insult. Social stigmas like caste discrimination were strongly prevalent in those times. Purna da loves him but also hates his naughty ways. Meanwhile a Brahmin high class family residing in the same village too is plagued by problems of their own. One of the two sons of the family does not like earning a livelihood simply by performing prayers around. He does not learn his scriptures well or anything expected from a Brahmin boy. His family falls in trouble often and is considered the laughing stock for this.
