Biography
Suzan Al-Doghachi has lived in New York City, Iraq, Germany and is currently working in Central America. She has worked as an editor for German public television. In 1993 she moved to New York City, producing, directing and editing features, shorts and documentaries. Al-Doghachi is the co-founder of AJAX FILMS and LASSO PRODUCTIONS. She is a recipient of the Manhattan Cultural Council Grant for her documentary “The Garifuna – An Enduring Spirit” which aired on Belizean Television and screened at the Museo del Barrio, NYC as well as part of the symposium on Garifuna culture at the Georgia State University Atlanta. She also has been on the jury for the CHICKS WITH FLICKS Film Festival 2002 – 2006.

MAXIMÓN - Devil or Saint is a documentary about the controversial Maya deity, also known as San Simon or the drinking and smoking saint of Guatemala. He is a mixture of ancient Maya beliefs and Christianity. The movie concentrates on the people who surround Maximón with their strong personalities, opinions and faith. The documentary gives us a rare view into the rituals and fiestas honoring Maximón. The cult of Maximón is flourishing because he performs miracles. He is also feared and despised because he is used to cast curses that can result in death. Ultimately, Maximón transcends the duality of good and evil, reflecting the Maya cosmovision in which everything in the universe co-exists.

The New York City summer is fueled by the sultry emanations of hot air that tumble off the tongues of potential thespians as they attempt to decipher the gastric guesswork embedded in the prose of the pre-production process. The video camera flits across the boroughs of NYC in a splash-dash sojourn of sumptuous banquets and bohemian bombast, while the down-to-earth wisdom of the seeing impaired helps to guide the protagonist into detours of wisdom befitting his putrid project. A theatrical play incubates in the balding head of the videomaker and as its presence makes itself felt among the various victims of his vision, we share with them the horror of advancing age and the descriptive diatribes toward the destiny of the decrepit damned.
