In the quiet Carpathian village of Yaseni, a series of brutal murders unfolds. A Kyiv detective, Markiyan Sych, comes to the village for rehabilitation after being wounded, and unwittingly finds himself in the middle of the investigation along with a young local policeman, Ivan Basyuk. The protagonist Andrii Dovzhenko finds out a horrible truth, that has been hidden in USSR for years - most of those accused of «anti-Soviet propaganda» were never sent to prison, but to special psychiatric hospitals with a diagnosis of "slow progressive schizophrenia". Andrii finds himself in a real hell of punitive psychiatry and faces a difficult choice - to cooperate with the KGB and return to his family, or to reveal the truth about dissidents tortured in such psychiatric hospitals. The script was based on the memoirs of Soviet dissidents who faced the brutality of a totalitarian system that used so-called "punitive psychiatry" as a weapon against free thought.

The picture tells about a difficult triangle of relations - the terminally ill woman Marie and the young couple Kira and Mark, who have lost their own child. Now they are ready to adopt Marie's five-year-old son. But the woman has a condition, she wants to make sure with her own eyes that the young family is ready for adoption. Kira and Mark are unaware of the price they will have to pay for this opportunity.
