The lives of Erik and Anna, students at a nursing school in 1950s Denmark, a time and place where it was not normal for a man to become a nurse.

The story centers on a family of priests: Johannes, Elisabeth and their sons August and Christian. Johannes is God-like to his sons - he gives, loves, and punishes. His favoritism for August and his disappointment with Christian forces both into making desperate choices in order to either gain his love or break free from him.

Vitus is stuck in a rut until he meets the optimistic and adventurous Emma. The two start a relationship, but Vitus leaves out the detail that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant.

During the making of a documentary, real estate agent Rasmus is confronted with the consequences of having kept his relationship with Tore a secret.
