This story starts in 1980 in Paris as the memories of Andrei Borodin, a Soviet agent, take the action back to 1943 during the Teheran meetings of Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill. A high-ranking Nazi officer developed a plan to assassinate the three world leaders in order to undermine the Allied forces. He commissioned the German agent Max Richard to carry out his plan, but it failed miserably due to the quick action and thinking of Andrei. While in Teheran, Andrei met a French woman, Marie Louni, living in the city and they had a brief but intense affair. Nearly four decades later, the Nazi officer has been captured - but not for long. Freed by terrorists, the officer is hunting down the German agent who failed to carry out the planned assassinations. Max lives at Françoise, a young French woman, who hides him.

Knowing that he will soon pass on, elderly Valentin Grack hires private detective Stanislav to follow him around for an entire day and write down everything that he does. It is a cold day and during Grack's travels he encounters a younger woman who addresses him as professor. He then meets a prostitute who turns out to be his daughter, and finally he meets an old woman, his worried wife who has been searching eight days for him. In between meeting the women, Grack finds himself in some almost surreal situations and having flashbacks about his youth.

European journalist visits Russia for the fist time. By chance he picks up a phone call at his fellow journalist Moscow office and this call sharply and irrevocably changes his life. He travels to a strange and ghostly provincial Russian town which seems to be real but couldn't be found on any road map. He meets there his dreams and fantasies, his love and his final day. By taking the identity of his friend he enters the ultimate adventure of living somebody Else's life and experiencing somebody Else's fate. But a price for that is his own life.

The fisherman helped him, treated him to a fish and received a reward from Leshy for his kindness - a mill that can grind salt and give him any food... if you know how to ask for it. The fisherman has healed well! But the happiness of others excites envy. The merchant stole a mill to grind salt, but was punished for greed - he drowned along with the ship. And the mill continues to work at the bottom - that’s why the water in the sea is salty.
