Biography

Vyacheslav Bihun is a Ukrainian film director and legal philosopher. Educated at leading universities in Ukraine and abroad, Dr. Bihun, prior to turning to filmmaking, worked as a lawyer at the European Court in Strasbourg. He was later trained as a film director at the Sorbonne (adaptation of fiction and political cinema) and Baltic Film School. The filmmaker, active from 2013-14, shot films in Ukraine, Georgia, Estonia, and France, nominated at over 150 film festivals, and celebrated with over 100 awards. He's well known for his active promotion of Ukrainian cinema. Bihun supported the release of his colleague, Oleg Sentsov, by joining him for 17 days in solidarity for a hunger strike. He’s one of the founders and chairman of the Directors Guild of Ukraine, which is the voice of film directors in Ukraine.

The fate of women against the backdrop of Transcarpathian history. The author's grandmother, Maria Fedorivna, recounts her life: how, as a 15-year-old girl, she had to marry into a second village because "the Russians were evicting the kulaks," how "the Russians" destroyed their family's house, the largest in the village, which had been built with money earned by migrant workers, took all their livestock and supplies, and sentenced her brother to seven years in prison. The wealthiest family was forced into poverty. The film also tells about the consequences of the 2015 earthquake in Okruha. When the tremors shook the village, Maria Fedorivna was in the hospital. Before she returned home, her relatives repaired the cracks in the house to protect Grandma Maria from anxiety.
