Anno 1826. Grethi Birger is 17 years old and is now all alone in the world. Her mother is dead, and she has never known her father. The navy captain Avanti Planetaros is inspired by his astronomer-father to travel through outer space to reach other worlds. Peter Blom, called Lynet, escapes from prison, and at the same time the unemployed actor Poul Quist sees his portrait in the newspaper, in connection with a film company wanting to make a film about Lynet, and is looking for someone to play the lead role. Since the resemblance between Blom and Quist is striking, Quist approaches the film company and then the pranks start to take off, when Quist pretends to be Lynet. The film director thinks that he really is Lynet and sees a sensation by giving him the role.

In a mansion full of secret rooms and passageways, people are dying shortly after seeing the ghost of a woman in gray, as an old legend dictates. Called in to solve the mystery, Sherlock Holmes has doubts about the supernatural aspect of the crimes and focuses on a more earthly culprit.

Young hothead Billy, quick to speak and drifting into a life of crime, has many encounters the community's lay preacher, John Redmond. Billy's conscience stirs as Redmond recounts his life's story. Holger-Madsen supplied three different endings for the film's various releases.

Hugo's valet see's his opportunity to strengthen his position. The film was banned in Denmark. Instead it opened in Finland.
