A butoh dancer embodies a castaway doll and performs in a shifting landscape of disappearing bodies of water from intertidal phenomenons. Butoh, also known as the ‘dance of utter darkness’, is a post-war Japanese avant- garde art form. Like the elemental changes of states from water to vapour, she senses something present but unable to be seen. A more invisible performer takes precedence, the PD150, an attribute to forgotten and lost objects. Memory becomes the act of ‘vanishing’ and follows the sensation of ‘missing’ through a span of space and time with objects, locations and people.

Bright plastic flowers in one frame, to adorn an afterlife; and flowered sheets in the other, to swaddle, to soothe and to hold. Reminders of how love manifests in different forms following profound loss, changing shape to fit the ones that continue to love and be loved.

Wayang, or Chinese Street Opera, has become a dying art in Singapore. Grace, a millennial filmmaker, visits her larger-than-life Aunty Maggie, who used to be an amateur Cantonese Wayang actress. Together, the charming duo reminisces and recreates the thrills of donning traditional embroidered costumes and performing together—a bridge between generations.
