Edmunds Berzs is an architect who has achieved a comfortable life, but this causes him unease, so he decides to go to the country house where his mother lives. There he wakes up to find himself locked in a cage in the middle of the forest. Edmunds, paradoxically, finds the tranquility he was looking for.
When a journalist from Riga arrives in a rural forest district to investigate a letter from former forester Čukurs warning about the destruction of local woodlands, forest ranger Liepsargs offers him a place to stay. As they look into the situation, Liepsargs finds himself battling both illegal logging and poaching, determined to protect the forest from those exploiting it.
A chronicle created from archival materials, which in terms of form continues the path of montage films once begun by Braun. The events in the film take place during the period from the 1905 revolution to the manifestations of Latvia's efforts to regain independence in the Baltic Way and the Third Awakening.
