Biography

Henriëtte 'Heintje' Davids was a Dutch actress and variety artist. She was the sister of Louis Davids, with whom she often performed. Up to this day the Dutch refer to the phenomenon of a star giving multiple 'farewell tours' -- yet always returning to the stage -- as the 'Heintje Davids-effect'.

The two families warm to each other in the end and the happy pair is united in wedded bliss. This comedy about the post-war housing shortage marked the return of the feature length Dutch film to the cinemas.

The wealthy farmer Kobus Drost is asked by his cousin Verbeek to come to Volendam to discuss the financing of his boat renovation. The meeting with Anna, Verbeek's maid, makes a big impression on Drost. He convinces the young woman to go with him to work on the farm. Drost's older sister is not particularly happy about this, nor are most of the farm workers, who tease the stranger from Volendam. Kobus, who likes Anna, often has to protect her. When he notices after some time that Anna and employee Arend are very fond of each other, he becomes terribly jealous. As soon as Arend is called up for military service, Kobus takes advantage of his absence and asks Anna to marry him. She agrees.

Back home, they find out things have changed while they were gone; Manus's girl Jans has been unfaithful to him, Toon's father now rejects him on account of his dissolute life and barmaid Auntie Piet has been cooking up a scheme to ruin Dries' relationship with his girl Greet.
