While visiting a Christmas market in her Norwegian town, eight year old Mariann spots a talking teddy bear at a carnival game booth. However, when someone else wins it, she embarks on a quest to find the adorable bear that captured her heart.

A small mouse family plans a quiet Christmas outside the city, but their celebration is disrupted when humans unexpectedly appear. As the mice try to hide their preparations, the humans react to the noises behind the walls with determination.

In the early 20th century, Luka, a poor, crippled young boy from the wrong side of the tracks, stumbles upon a theatre at the end of a carnival, where he befriends a bunch of kids who work and live at the theatre, and he feels more at home there than he has anywhere else. However, at the same time, an evil, ruthless upper-class woman on the brink of bankruptcy plots to sell the theatre to gain some extra money, and if that happens, everyone at the theatre will be thrown out into the streets. Luka works together with his new friends to try to save it.

To her, they are the worst parents in the world. Miles away from doing a decent job, constantly fighting yet still in love by the time Diana is preparing for her own marriage 30 years later.
