The youth construction team celebrated Anatoly and Varya's wedding with fun. Without giving importance to the first quarrel, Varya, however, once admitted to herself that she did not understand Anatoly's aspirations for a cozy furnished life. She tried painfully to understand her husband, who was jealous not only of her work, but also of her friend Kostya. When the spats became more frequent, Varya took little Vasilk with her and traveled to the Urals together with the installers.

Set in 1955 when many migrated from Russia to the Steppes of Kazakhstan, this is the trip back to the Canal from the frontier and farms by a number of people who tell their settler stories. Alyonka Muratova is a winsome 13 year old who talks Dmitry Prokovich, the chief mechanic for the Soviet, into giving up his seat in the truck to a young mother with her infant daughter. Then Alyonka and Dmitry share the back of the open truck with a young woman, newly graduated dentist who has not been able to find a position, Stefan, a hitchhiker with a dog who hopes his upper-class wife will return to him and the countryside, and Vasselina Petrovolka, a woman who lost one of her twin daughters in a riding accident by the river shortly after they arrived, and now is returning to tell the other twin of her sister's fate. A warm hearted look at common folks traveling in the frontier.

The story takes place in a Soviet placed in what is now Ukraine. A mechanic arrives in the Soviet, lead by a young independent woman driving tractors and, between many comedy sketches and propaganda mottoes, a love comes to light.

Dr. Ivan Nikolayevich received a bronze candelabrum as a gift from Sasha Smirnov, who was grateful for his cure. But the doctor is embarrassed: the candelabrum is very immodest - two completely naked naiads. The Doctor is thinking: who would he give this unfortunate present to? Suddenly he remembers that he owes lawyer Ukhov for his consultations. In turn, Ukhov, driven by the same feeling as the doctor, gets rid of the gift, giving it to the comic actor Shashkin on the day of the benefit. Shashkin, deciding that such a "work of art" could compromise him, sells the candelabrum to an antique bronze store owned by Sasha's mother Smirnov. And Sasha, delighted that at last he has found a match for the donated candelabrum, gives it to the doctor.

The film tells the of certain events of the Polish-Soviet War as is accepted in Soviet history.
