Dream of the Red Chamber, first released in 1987, was a television series produced by CCTV, adapted from the classic 18th century Chinese novel of the same name. It gained enormous popularity for its music, cast, and plot adaptation, being regarded by many within China as being a near-definitive adaptation of the story.

Disguised as a Holy Monk of the Golden Light Temple, Tian Yuan challenges the high priest of Shaolin for ultimate rule of the holy place. But just as combat ensues, Emperor Tang's guards overrun the temple, killing all in their path (except a small group of priests who escape with the venerated - and magical - holy robe). The evil emperor will lose power if he can't locate the robe. But the monks aren't giving it up without a helluva fight!

Adapted from Zhang Yu's "The Appendix" and Chen Jun's "A Boring Story," the story revolves around Zhao Youliang, the mayor of a certain city, who holds significant power. However, his actions are constantly monitored closely by his secretary and wife, with the best intentions, making it difficult for him to act freely according to his own will, which distresses him. To implement the higher authorities' instructions for clean and honest governance, he begins to act alone frequently, wandering the streets and alleys like an ordinary citizen. He feels relaxed and enlightened, gaining insights he couldn't obtain from sitting in his office.
