Bucharest, October 1989: a secondary school student disappears without a trace. Weeks later, he resurfaces at a meeting of the Communist Youth where he is denounced for certain "reprehensible actions" and excluded from the organization. As a result of the same "reprehensible" deeds he is expelled from the school. His schoolmates are never told what his actions actually were. "Notorious deeds, unworthy of being mentioned," is the only comment provided by a high-level communist party representative. Now, 25 years later, those involved are keen to tell their side of the story.

George Marinescu was the principal news anchor of Romania’s national television for twenty years under the communist dictatorship. In 1989, just hours after broadcasting the regime’s threats against the demonstrators, he becomes a spokesperson for the revolutionary group that has occupied the television station. He later goes on to pursue a career as a journalist in the democratic era.

A 1966 issue of Merian, a travel magazine, featuring Romania was filled with a number of positive articles, but there was one that criticized the regime. This inspired me to view 8mm vacation movies from the ’70s. At first glance the foreign tourists seemed to follow the recommendations from Merian and enjoy a carefree vacation. After a second look I noticed hints of a past familiar to me. (Gabriel Tempea)
