On February 26, 2018, the bodies of 27-year-old Ján Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kušnírová were found in Veľká Mača. The investigative journalist specialized in articles where he clarified the connection between the political elite and the Italian mafia group 'Ndrangheta. The execution of the young journalist caused an uproar in Slovak society and led to the resignation of Robert Fico, the prime minister at the time and one of the main actors of Kuciak's articles.
