Xiao Cao is a young orphan living with her cruel aunt and uncle. She has a sisterly bond with her neighbour, Qing Qing, who is being forced into a marriage with a much older man by her older brother. Desperate to escape their unfortunate circumstances, the two girls manage to run away together on the day of Qing Qing's wedding. During their escape they coincidentally meet He Shiwei, a young university student who is also running away from his family due to an arranged marriage. After a few initial misunderstandings the three decide to travel together. However, things become complicated when they encounter the Fu family, and the family matriarch mistakes He Shiwei for her son, Fu Yuankai, who died 10 years ago.

The series is divided into 5 main stories: Yang Guifei, Zhong Kui meets Justice Bao, The Secret of the Goblet, Beauty from Jiangshan and Snow in June. Zhong Kui is a widely known legendary figure. He is a ghost catcher in China. He is conferred a title of “Ghost Catching General” and “Yama – King of Hell”. It authorises him to manage all matters of injustice. Zhong Kui helps to redress cases in which the victims die unjustly. The culprits of mischief will surely be punished.

A warrior from the underworld and his assistant enter the human realm to try and destroy the fox spirit that has been terrorizing their tribe. After the warrior gets injured and loses his sword the kindly village doctor and his daughter take him in. Then bad things start happening to the village - livestock killed, babies snatched, people murdered. The villagers are suspicious of the stranger. He needs to find his sword and kill the fox to rid two worlds of its evil.
