Set in Prague during the years leading up to World War II, this family saga tells the story of a cobbler named Vincenc Bursik (Vladimir Mensik), who uproots his clan from the country to the city, only to suffer the loss of his wife and the failure of his shoe business within months. When his daughter moves away to go live with a wealthy businessman as his mistress, Vincenc is left to take care of his two sons, who spend their days in a secret garden vying for the affections of a teenage girl.

Attorney Horic is a specialist for cases connected with motoring. He approaches to his work unconventionally, he does not hesitate to search for evidence right in the terrain and he is willing to take various risks.

The servant Josef enters the seemingly peaceful household of the psychiatrist Jaroslav and his wife Žofie, a great lover of the theatre. He is supposed to serve the purpose of increasing the prestige of the family, but he is the true source of confusion and senseless actions. The household becomes a real madhouse. Friend Arthur advises how to get rid of the servant. He will have to be persuaded that Madame Sophie is a psychiatric case. But as we watch this mess, the question gradually arises - who is the madman here?
