A Jewish goldsmith Mordche arrives in besieged medieval Trnava with his wife and granddaughter Golda just as the king’s captain Zenas demands new volunteers to defend the city against Ottoman invasion. The burgomaster’s son, a young painter, falls profoundly in love with Golda and paints her portrait imbued with a magical power to weep and cry for help when Zenas’s persecution of Mordche’s family reaches Golda.
Kežmarok is another of the towns we will visit in the free cycle of stories Behind the City Walls, so that we can get to know the beauty and part of the history of this town through a heartfelt love story. The story is set during the time of the Rakoczi Uprising. While the city struggles for its existence, Jacob, the son of a senator, fights for his love and his friend, the student Gregor, is haunted by the apparition of the Black Lady. And since Gregor is indifferent to neither the fate of the town nor the fate of his friend, it is Gregor to whom the Black Lady entrusts her treasure.
The rich farmer Shrnej is such a miser that he won't even marry so he doesn't have to support his wife and won't even allow his servant to do so. He uses his wits and comes up with a ruse - when the farmer goes to town, he sees a girl at the crossroads who sings that she doesn't eat or drink, that she only lives on air. That would be a woman! A hard worker and she wouldn't cost him anything! And so the farmer marries, unaware that he's marrying his servant's sister, who makes a living like everyone else. It's only when he thinks she's been roasted by him that he begins to suspect her. But wherever he hides so he can follow her, he pays the price, and almost loses his life...
