The increase in controls and safety measures does not prevent the occurrence of dramatic accidents, such as the sinking of the Costa Concordia in 2012, which claimed the lives of thirty-two people. Like 80-90% of accidents at sea, this disaster was caused by human error, which the standards set by the International Maritime Organization can hardly eradicate.
