When the widower Sudhangsu is about to get married, a woman claiming to be his first wife tries to stop the wedding. However, Sudhangsu believes this woman is an imposter because he believes his wife has committed suicide.
The bread-winning daughter in a middle-class family fails to return from work one evening. The saga begins with worries at home, followed by midnight searches and finally a deepening crisis arising out of economic and moral constraints prevalent in the society. Yet the film speaks of hope and of strength hidden behind despair.

Nivaran Chatterjee lives with his wife and three sons: an elder married, son Kedarnath impaired after a head injury, and youngest Amarnath, a student. Amarnath loves Beeni Mukherjee, whose sister Saraswati studies. Kedarnath admires Saraswati but pretends to be an athlete; she learns his fraud, ends the romance and marries her father's chosen suitor.
