Ludvina is considered a woman of loose morals in her small home town. When she becomes pregnant, she decides to raise the child without the help of a man.

No one knows that the rich landowner of Borgan is the father of Anne whose parents work on the farm. The landowner's brother has bad times in the city and his son wants to be a farmer. he is secretly engaged to be married to Anne.

Young student Steffen Berg finds it difficult to adapt to society's laws and rules. After dropping out of medical school, he starts working in a shop to support his family, together with his brother Jørgen and sister Gerda, and to keep his mother out of a nursing home. One of Steffen's friends is going to America with his wife and needs money. Steffen takes 500 kroner from the store's cash register. The next day, there is an audit and Steffen's theft is discovered.

Two young girls go to the big city to work in a food store. The owner's wife believes she's sick, and the owner is more than interested in the two girls. Based on Oscar Braathen's Novel.

The story tells of the many misadventures, some comical, and trials and tribulations that Bør Børson, Jr. has to go through and endure in proving himself a citizen worthy enough to marry the squire's daughter.
