Biography

Wilhelmina (31 August 1880 – 28 November 1962) was Queen of the Netherlands from 1890 until her abdication in 1948. She reigned for nearly 58 years, making her the longest-reigning monarch in Dutch history, as well as the longest-reigning female monarch outside of the United Kingdom. Her reign encompassed World War I, the Dutch economic crisis of 1933, and World War II.

Live broadcast on the occasion of Queen Beatrix's twenty-fifth anniversary of her reign. In the Knight's Hall in The Hague, members of the First and Second Chambers and members of the Cabinet gather for a Special Joint Session of the States General. The Queen and her family are present at the meeting. Subsequently, an aubade is performed for the Queen at the Binnenhof. The presentation is hosted by Maartje van Weegen, who speaks in the studio with historian Jan Bank, interspersed with reports on the celebration of Queen's Day in various locations and well-known figures congratulating the Queen. Documentary accompanying the new book 'Bernhard: A Hidden History' by author Annejet van der Zijl. The book provides a historical reconstruction of Bernhard zur Lippe Biesterfeld's German childhood. For this, Van der Zijl spent five years researching the archives of, among others, Bernhard's German family and his secondary schools, and spoke with friends and acquaintances from his time in Germany. NOS reporter Arjan Nieuwenhuizen interviews Van der Zijl and returned to Wojnowo, now located in Poland but German territory at the time, and the place where Bernhard grew up on the Reckenwalde estate. Arjan Nieuwenhuizen unexpectedly stumbled upon unique private footage of Bernhard himself, filmed during his childhood and the first years with Princess Juliana. Excerpts from this can be seen in the documentary.
