Santiago, a Mexican queer migrant who lives happily with his husband in San Francisco, receives a message from Angel, an old flame who reveals that he has written to ask for forgiveness. Santiago must now confront the past to reconnect with the first love who he met when he first arrived in the U.S.

Before and After Detention follows the journey of three transgender women as they seek a better life in the US as they face transphobia, racism, and discrimination. Yet, they are filled with hope and resilience even as they fight every day to call the US home.
