One’s own family is not always easy. Protagonist Akosua is queer, Ghanaian-German, polyamorous, and she wants a child. Her friend, director Mala Reinhardt, accompanies her for three years on her journey through Germany and Ghana in search of her identity and belonging in a multicultural context.

Paula (32) is living her dream: a life of idleness. She enjoys people-watching in the park, riding the subway just forfun, and letting her imagination roam free. It could all be so wonderful if her surroundings weren't shiftingbetween misunderstanding, envy, and anger. When her job center counselor finally loses patience and forces herto start applying for jobs, her dream seems to be coming to an end.

This is our documentary, it is about you and me. One day after you disappeared, after you sent that break-up message, I made you this video letter. A day after the military took power. In a matter of a day, you and I lost us, and we all lost a revolution. I am not angry, I am disappointed. But how does one live disappointment? What is the physical action associated with disappointment? Anger is much easier. Sadness is much easier. Hatred is the easiest. But I don’t hate you. You are too innocent to hate. We were too innocent to win. It is life.

A sparse room with a single power plug. The jewel: a copy machine. Leather, metal, fur. A place where you don‘t sit squarely at a table with flowers and a salt shaker, but where you explore all dimensions of the space. Unwielding forms. Between 1981 and 1996, the lesbian-run „Pelze Multimedia“ in West Berlin was a beloved and notorious venue for experimental art and music, for sex parties, bar nights and avant-garde fashion shows staged on a scaffolding. Interviews with three of the showrunners are intertwined with private archive materials. SUBJECT SPACES explores the memory of a subculture, the question of feminist heritage and an aesthetic practice that stood in stark contrast to large parts of the women‘s movement at the time.
