The story is set in an ancient time, when the whole country was covered in thick forests. A mysterious plague breaks out, resulting in countless deaths. A pure young man named Yoshihiko becomes chosen as a hero, and he sets out on a journey in order to save a village. He has two goals – to bring back the legendary plant that can cure the plague, and to rescue his father Teruhiko who left to find the plant but never returned.

The drama begins in August 1945, three days after the end of the Pacific war. A freight train completely jam-packed with passengers heads for Aomori from devastated Tokyo. On the train is Takahara Miki and her sister Sachi. Miki and Sachi are the daughters of a wealthy landlord living in a village in the Tsugaru area in Aomori prefecture, but they have been living in Tokyo since before the war to attend school. After seeing her village does not have a doctor, Miki is determined to become a rural doctor.

Halcyon Skies

Director Yuichi Fukuda adapted selected episodes from the original comic into an animated film. The live-action cast of Ryuta Sato, Yoshinori Okada and Takashi Tsukamoto take on the challenge of voice acting, showing a different looseness to the live-action version. Futoshi, Matsun and Mickey are three people with zero ambition. With nothing in particular to do, they just keep on dabbling in a family restaurant late at night. Their evening goes by as they engage and disengage, get excited and lose their temper, and somehow carry on a series of conversations.
