Narsimha, an old ventriloquist and 'horbola' lives in a decrepit locality of Kolkata. Once a favourite among children, he barely manages to survive now and is reduced to a shabby madman. Abandoned by his family, he has a solitary friend in a local 'kabadi-wala', who, all of a sudden, brings him an old, majestic chair- a 'kedara'.

Bolai, a sensitive, quiet, motherless child raised by his aunt and uncle, sees plants and trees as living beings and intimate friends. His uncle considers a shimul tree an eyesore on the path and cuts it down, causing deep, quiet distress to Bolai.
