Hsu Ching-chu

Weaving two stories set 30 years apart, First of May is about a middle-aged man looking back at his teenage years, dreaming of his first and possibly only love. At the center of the drama is Bai, a 17-year-old student living with her single mother Wong Lei, and her grandmother. Bai gradually falls for her admirer/stalker Yeh, who is always walking behind her and her best friend Wen Wen wherever they go.

They left home for the very first time at the age of 25. Both female protagonists began to learn about themselves. One tried to live on her own while the other enjoyed the wonder of loving someone. Both found their way to live life to its fullest. They learned and they changed through the life experiences; a wondrous journey through time, living with no regrets along the way.

On the Sunday after Mother’s Day in 1988, SHEN Yuan was alone at home and received a family letter from the other side that had been blocked for 40 years. The letter revealed that her mother had passed away long ago and that she had eagerly anticipated Yuanmei’s return every day. SHEN Yuan closed the curtains, pulled out a camphor wood box, and retrieved pieces of cheongsams she recalled occasionally. Singing, dancing, and chatting with her mother in spirit, she experienced moments of sadness and laughter.
