On a stopover in Moscow, a young writer Volodya makes friends with Kolya, who is returning home from a hard night shift. Just as Kolya is about to take a rest, he is met by his old friend Sasha, who wants help getting a deferral from military service so that he can get married.

A teenage boy, an orphan, gets a job at a factory and begins to experience a different - adult and responsible - life...

The plot is based on events that took place in St. Petersburg in May 1901, when workers at the Obukhov military factory rebelled against the tsar.

In a boarding school in a provincial Siberian town comes a literature teacher, a graduate of a teacher training college. The directness with which the heroine intrudes into the life of the school provokes active resistance from the principal and head teacher. As a result of a series of clashes, the young teacher must leave the boarding school, but her pupils protest, and the directorate is defeated.

Sasha came to visit his grandfather, a forester. He thought that in the reserved forest wilderness, near the Sovetskaya River, an unforgiving silence had settled in and that he could rest in peace. But here goes its own complicated life. It turned out that his grandfather was waging a real war with poachers who were killing sturgeon that were spawning.

Viktor, the protagonist, a war hero of the war between the Red Army and the Turkish 'basmachi', has to fight off bandits that hope to steal gold from Viktor's village town. TIme to pick up arms once again.

The story is about two teenage brothers and their mother. All three of them are very fond of each other. But the younger Danilka is a gifted artist going through a "creative crisis", and the older Boris is trying to convince his mother that he is an adult and capable of making independent decisions.
