The troubled story of the Churruca family, a noble lineage of brave seamen, descendants of Cosme Damián Churruca, the Spanish hero of the Battle of Trafalgar; from the Spanish-American War (1898) to the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). (In 1950, a new cut of the film was released with less ideological depth and ten minutes shorter.)

A small Spanish town, Villar del Río, is alerted to the upcoming visit of American diplomats and its ruling townsmen begin preparations to impress the American visitors, in the hopes of benefiting under the Marshall Plan. Hoping to demonstrate the side of Spanish culture with which the visiting foreign officials would be more familiarized, the Castilian citizens don unfamiliar Andalusian costumes, hire a renowned flamenco performer, and re-decorate their town in Andalusian style, meantime waiting for their uncertain arrival.

After the village festivals, where Juanillo has acted as a bullfighter and Dolores has performed, he has been hired as bullfighter for a tour in America. They exchange vows, but their letters will be intercepted.

A Dutch sailing ship finds the wreckage of a Spanish mail ship, which has collided with an iceberg. Inside, the bodies of a man and a woman are found embraced.

Javier is crazy in love for Bibiana, a beautifull acctress who is foing out with a wicked buisiness man. Javier suspects that his beloved is keeping a double set with another man, however, and despite the warnings of his friends, the boy decides to investigate on their own.

Clara, determined to earn her living and be valued for herself, leaves his rich father's home, changes her name and takes a room. While copying paintings at El Prado Museum, she meets Juan, who is also hiding his identity, pursued under charge of murder.

A good-for-nothing young man and his friend are involved in a woman's death. To escape Police and wanting a change he goes to the small country village he used to visit with his family. Yet his past will find him there.
