The film is a "reconstruction" of the real event of Sum Kuning’s rape that happened 10 years before, and sums up the lack of justice in the Indonesian courts. Sumirah, is raped by four vandals but during the investigation, the event is given a ridiculous interpretation when Sum is forced to confess that she was trying to gain popularity for herself. During the trial, the true facts are revealed gradually and this ranks as one of the best courtroom films ever made complete with spirited and lively dialogue.

Mulyono returns to his village, Tembarak, after serving time in Nusakambangan prison. His village is in the midst of a village headman election. There are two strong candidates with opposite attitude. One believes that any means is justifiable while the other one follows the straight road. Mulyono finds his wife murdered. She was previously suffering from a mental illness. His daughter is missing and his son is now a criminal. Mulyono then becomes the scapegoat in the village riot during the election. Eventually he clears his name. Then he meets his daughter who is ready to marry the future village head while he captures his son who is willing to be imprisoned.
Slamet, a reporter, begins a relationship with Wulandari, a dancer and painter. But Wulan’s mother does not approve of their relationship. Then Slamet returns to Wulan with Donna’s encouragement. The film is also a commentary about the changing social values in Yogyakarta: such as the intimate acts between Wulan and Slamet in Wulan’s room; the boarding house that has more relaxed rules than usual; and the busy street of Malioboro.

The angry King Baka personally led an attack on Pengging and was killed by Bandung Bondowoso. The son of the Baka king, Loro Jonggrang saw his father die and held a grudge against Bandung Bondowoso. When Bandung Bondowoso was about to propose, Loro Jonggrang also put forward a condition to build a thousand temples. When there was one less temple, Loro Jonggrang made the cock crow as if it was morning. Bandung, knowing that Loro Jonggrang was cheating, cursed it, making it the thousandth and largest temple.
