In the winter of 1982, three American boys find themselves stranded in a cable car with a dead body, suspended midair in the mountains of Norway during a rare celestial event.
A fractured family retreats to a remote winter villa, hoping to reconnect. But when the children discover a mysterious puzzle box hidden in the ruins of a neighboring house, they unknowingly unleash imprisoned spirits bent on fear, possession and death. As the box begins to feed, only sacrifice will stop its hunger.
Pasi, a lonely but kind-hearted designer of artificial animals, lives in a world where nature is just a memory and human well-being is organized with perhaps too much care. One day, Pasi accidentally finds the world's last living squirrel and meets Emilia, an official who enforces the rules of well-being.
