2007: 17-year-old Karl lives with his single father Werner in a cramped flat in an East Berlin apartment block. Karl's eight-year-old brother David is in a sheltered housing group. Karl feels overwhelmed in his contact with his little brother, because David looks to him for what their 62-year-old father cannot provide. After their father's birthday, something unexpected happens: Karl lays an egg. He tries with all his might to keep the hatching creature alive.

Grey house facades roll by like monstrous walls. Numerous identical windows, creating lines of lights as they pass by steadily. The bike courier Michel pushes through crowded streets of a dystopian city of the future. On behalf of the monopoly Clinair, he delivers oxygen tanks that are now necessary.

Margarita, 13 years old and an introverted outsider at school, observes the beautiful Ariana on a school trip. All the boys want to be near Ariana, and all the girls want to be like her. Margarita is also fascinated by Ariana and a secret friendship develops between the two very different girls. But then Margarita observes how the crush on Ariana can get out of control and a dark secret is imposed on the class community. Margarita is faced with a conflict of conscience for which there seems to be no solution.

Two 12-year-old boys secretly watch their physically disabled neighbor having sex with a woman through the window. The next day their doorbell rings.
